A hands-on AWS workshop at AWS North Community Conference 2026:

Running cost-efficient steady state workloads on AWS Lambda

Join AWS experts Pushparaju Thangavel and Matt Ridehalgh for a practical, hands-on workshop exploring how to optimise the cost and performance of steady state workloads using AWS Lambda Managed Instances (LMI).

Taking place as part of AWS North Community Conference 2026, this dedicated workshop will give developers, solutions architects and DevOps engineers the opportunity to explore LMI in action, understand its benefits and discover when it's the right choice for their workloads.

Date: Thursday 15 October 2026
Time: 2:30pm–5:00pm
Location: Level 6, BALTIC Centre for Contemporary Art, Gateshead
Workshop leads: Pushparaju Thangavel and Matt Ridehalgh

About the workshop
AWS Lambda Managed Instances (LMI) enables you to run Lambda functions on EC2 instances within your own VPC, combining the simplicity of serverless development with greater control over compute resources and costs.

By removing cold starts and using EC2-based pricing rather than per-invocation billing, LMI offers an alternative for workloads with sustained, predictable demand.

In this interactive workshop, you'll learn how to create an LMI capacity provider, deploy and evaluate a function, and use the LMI cost calculator to explore different pricing scenarios. You'll leave with a clearer understanding of how LMI works, which workloads are best suited to it, and how to configure, optimise and estimate costs to make informed architectural decisions.

What you'll do:

  • ‍Build an LMI capacity provider – Get hands-on experience configuring the infrastructure needed to run Lambda functions on managed EC2 capacity.

  • ‍Deploy and evaluate a function – Run a CPU-intensive workload on LMI and explore its performance.

  • ‍Optimise concurrency and scaling – Understand how to tune your configuration to balance performance, capacity and cost.

  • ‍Calculate your break-even point – Use the LMI cost calculator to compare pricing scenarios and identify when LMI becomes a cost-effective option.

‍Why attend?
Discover how AWS Lambda Managed Instances can help you achieve:

  • Greater cost efficiency: Explore how hourly compute pricing, Savings Plans and Reserved Instances can reduce costs for sustained, high-utilisation workloads.

  • ‍Improved performance: Understand how dedicated vCPUs provide consistent compute capacity, with the workshop's CPU-intensive example demonstrating approximately 25–30% faster execution on LMI.

  • ‍More predictable costs: Learn how to plan compute expenditure and achieve consistent execution times through effective concurrency configuration.

Who should attend?
This workshop is designed for developers, solutions architects and DevOps engineers working with AWS Lambda, particularly those running sustained, CPU-intensive workloads. Whether you're looking to optimise an existing application or evaluating architectural options for a new project, you'll gain practical knowledge to help determine when LMI makes sense for your systems.
